Not everyone should go to college. We have been convinced by the higher education lobby that they do. Just watch how many commercials are on television about higher education and that if you want a prayer you better get a degree. You simply do not see these commercials in Europe for example.

That isn't to say that having a college degree is bad but it is not a cure all. If you end up $100k in debt after 4 years of school, you have likely been ripped off. Possible exception is a very high end Ivy league school. People are not getting a great product for the money. I look at my own kids. I have one with a BA and two have completed their AA and working on their BA. They are simply not getting the education college students did a generation or two ago.

Agree they should have an alternate path that produces mechanics, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc. Additionally, some occupations do not really require a college degree but use a college degree as a screening tool. Information Technology is one of those fields. You really do not need a degree to be a great computer programmer...........it is largely irrelevant. So along with the alternate paths they need to change some employment MUST HAVES for existing fields like IT.

Easy fix. Start requiring the four year colleges along with the IVY League colleges to offer comparable online distance learning courses that also produce a degree...........and you'll see costs fall significantly and far more people educated as most if they had the choice would choose distance learning on their own schedule vs lecture style instruction on a college campus on a fixed schedule
