Mixed feeling, Cayle. I think school STAFF should be selected from a list of volunteers. Not all will be a good fit teachers included and many won't want to do it anyway. They should be back-up to the SROs that should already on campus to protect student as they evacuate or shelter in place.

My wife has worked in the school system for almost 15 years. She would be happy (and is well trained and very competent with all manner of weapons) to be an armed staff member. School boards usually have the ultimate say on whether or not it is allowed and who gets to do so. Lots of issues and training needed before this is done on a mass basis, but well worth getting behind.

My feeling on this subject would be to first have armed SRO's on every campus, preferably more than one. From there I would have staff/teachers, who are volunteers and trained to be armed. Those staff are the ones that will be the last line of defense for the students. My wife was a media specialist in schools for over 25 years, she would not be one if the volunteers. She doesn't wish to learn to shoot. No one should be forced to carry.
As to SRO's, I would like to see school districts hire and train combat veterans, individuals that are already proven under fire. My 2 cents worth.

Maj Robert Thornton - Basically echoed my comments. Plenty of Vets would volunteer I'm sure. Vetting and training still needs to be done.

If properly trained and certified, no problem here.

In theory...

Problem is that training, weapons and ammo cost money. We in the military already complain about online sexual harassment training consuming too much time away from field training. We can imagine teachers complaining about range training consuming too much time from classroom prep.
