I first heard of SAMS when my father was a Fellow and I was in college. My discussions with him highlighted the high level of this program and the students enrolled.
During my early career I knew many SAMS graduates and was mentored by several, so SAMS was always something I considered for myself.
When I wasn’t selected for resident CGSC I figured my option to attend SAMS had disappeared, but while I was in my KD Major jobs I heard of the ‘from the field’ options.
When I was selected to attend as a promotable Major (I reported to class as a junior LTC) I knew I was adding a skill set that would make me better.
After struggling though SAMS, and now after 6 years of hindsight (including serving on a Division Staff as a deputy G3, as a battalion commander, as a NATO 3-Star HQs exercise planner, and now as a deputy Brigade Commander) I see more of what this program means to the military and am glad to see continued refinement and improvement.
