You eluded to it in your article, but many probably don't care or don't consider it worth their time investment.

IMHO many may not want the issues that brought their status to the forefront opened for consideration. I never saw anyone discharged for simply being gay or lesbian. It was inappropriate acts that apply to heterosexuals that resulted in their discharge. Bad choices are bad choices. Sexual orientation rarely has anything to do with it.

I think the question is whether those relations were deemed "inappropriate" because they were homosexual, or because all sexual relations between service members are inappropriate (not likely). I'm not talking about drugs or other offenses... just something that 2 heterosexual SMs would not receive a discharge for. Commanders were not willing to call a spade a spade, even though they could have at the time. Those who were discharged under false pretenses now don't have the opportunity to come back in, or have their separation code changed because someone was afraid to call it like it was.
It sounds like you're saying that there must have been some other unsavory activity that drew attention to a homosexual relationship. Maybe in some cases, but not all.

While on recruiting duty 1980, I was assigned to a multi-slot station, A Recruiter SSG female hated recruiting duty so much she went so far as to openly claimed to be lesbian, just to get discharged. As many DI's and Recruiters know what stresses can be placed upon you, which takes a mental toll on the meek borderline performers
