The bureaucratic political B.S. has turned everything upside down, backwards and inside out! Hopefully, we somehow keep going forward... I think after the moon landing, it was kind of the culmination of the past several years and then it was like, ok, what do we do now? I think once we get back to exploring deep space, the interest will come back. I also think the war in Vietnam had a lot to do with public support waning after the Apollo 11 mission.
