Why Is It So Difficult for Veterans With PTSD to Get Service Dogs?

I think this problem goes well beyond service dogs. Vets with PTSD are not treated with the same disability resources that many physical or other disability challenges come with. My husband has experienced this first hand - going as far as being told by his SSDI judge that his mental health disability is "not a real disability" because it doesn't physically impair him. Really disappointing. I would recommend working with a private trainer to locate a puppy and have them trained!

Unfortunately the treatment protocol at the VA has been masking the symptoms with pharmaceuticals with a focus on the psychotropic drugs for treating PTS. What we are finding is a vast majority of the Veterans diagnosed with PTS actually have misdiagnosed Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The reason so many Veterans never seem to get better is because the drugs have zero efficacy in treating a physical brain injury.

I think it would help with getting most vets out and about.
