Probably one of the best articles written on the subject - and one I thought many would want a read of if they had not seen this Australian General's post previously. This is one of those articles that every one should have a look at because it offers so much to something so often misunderstood or lost in attempts to over state the real purpose of doing it and exploiting it an the conflict it has with perceptions of security.

Social media use can be great...if done correctly for the right reasons. I once worked for a toxic battalion commander of a basic training unit. Upon assumption of command, he ordered company social media pages to be taken down for consolidation at battalion level. He became the sole social media mouthpiece for the unit primarily to promote his own personal image.

I had good and bad experiences similar to that - and it defeated the purpose of having it when such occurred. But this article was different than all the ones of pros and cons - this was on using it to exploit your efforts. I used local news papers and press releases in old days to similar effect getting soldiers deeds noticed and informing the community of more than they knew.

Social Media casts a wide net. If government sponsored, it can be a great tool for communication to Active Duty and their dependents. In the civilian world, good place to exchange ideas, as long as existing guidelines promulgated are adhered to. If the various IG groups followed many of these sites, careers could be limited.

I think there is potential on the public affairs front, but when he implies that social media can be an effective means of communicating official policies/orders I'm more concerned about that. You could easily end up with what we have in the White House, where the Sec of State was out in a foreign country, and the POTUS tweeted something about Turkey that was different than the SecState was saying. You don't want battalion or company commanders finding out from troops that the Bde Commander just tweeted out some new policy, bypassing the chain of command. Then you also run into the issue of just how official is a tweet or a facebook post. Does it carry the weight of an order? Does it represent official policy? So I am a bit more cautious about social media replacing chain of command communications.
