Why the US Must Remain a Stabilizing Force Around the World

It would seem that that question has been answered by the activities over the past 7 years. Instability around the globe, rather than hot spots as in the past.

I offer two points:
1) The rest of the world does a great job of destabilizing itself without the United States. Global peace was a pipe dream prior to the American Revolution and it still is. The U.S. should stay engaged diplomatically and militarily to help shape events to its advantage/interests.
2) Disengagement will only create an environment that makes downsizing the military easier and will slow down R&D in military technology. Also, the civilian market benefits from military R&D. The American economy of today cannot conduct a quick and massive military build up like it used to.
