History will tell us a shift towards the U.S would be a smart move for Vietnam. Look what happened to Japan (and others) after WW11. Bitter enemies then best of friends. The U.S. helped Japan become a major industrial and financial world power.

China is trying to bully the other nations that have interest in the south china sea, Vietnam is looking for a possible big brother to help it out. The war is long over and if their interest and the U.S. interest align then it would be only smart for both nations to come to friendlier terms.
