It's all about the seaports, which is why Crimea, Ukraine (Odessa) Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are so important to the Russian economy and navy.

Russia has its own port facility and naval base on the coast of the Black Sea in Novorossiysk, Russia, among other places, even without having the Crimean Penninsula. Odessa is probably the biggest port city on either the Russian or Ukrainian shores, but it's located west of Crimea and it's not going to become part of Russia unless all of Ukraine becomes part of Russia.

All that is just FYI. (I have lived in Novorossiysk and I have been to Odessa many times.)

It's a beautiful location, Novorossiysk is a large port but can't be expanded, certainly not to the extent Putin wants in order to restore the Soviet economy. One of the major reasons why we are putting Army bases in the NATO Baltic countries, Romania, and Bulgaria (depending on the month).

Since the Russians own Crimea now, and that's not likely to change anytime soon, they're not likely to try to acquire Odessa unless they're making a move on most/all of Ukraine. Crimea is nothing but port facilities (exaggeration for effect). That was my point.

Very interesting article. I found the "chokepoints" most interesting!
