Is China prepared to risk losing its most important market for its manufactured goods? To what purpose? China has suffered whenever U.S. consumer demand has merely ebbed in recent years. Imagine what would happen to their economy if the U.S. retaliated by restricting commerce. I think that would send a stronger message than merely floating boats in their bathtub

Interesting article, but one thing that is not stressed is the difference between now and then. Times seem to have changed under the Trump Administration.
Under Obama, we were very constrained and not allowed to be at all aggressive in conducting Freedom of Navigation Operations (FONOP). Navy was only allowed to do what the president wanted us to do in foreign policy - as he himself did - NOTHING.
Under Trump, we seem to have more freedom to be America. While not rattling sabers, Navy is able to at least not hide and act meekly. One thing the article pointed out and I agree with is that an FONOP is sometimes subtle and not obvious. Just being within the 12-mile INTERNATIONAL limits of a nation sends a message that the United States does not recognize a claim to that nation owning that particular rock.

So, to answer the question, yes we are doing so. At least right now and under this President. Navy is part of the National Strategy, not a lone agent. Look for other signs that America is resisting China and you may see them. Economic policys as well as military strategy may be combined to offer a stronger answer to diplomacy where one alone is not enough.

At this point their claims are pretty solid since nobody has stood up to them... they laughed at World Court rulings against them... out options are getting more limited by the day. There IS precedent for China's claims, look at the Falklands/Malvinas dustup between Argentina & UK... only in the beginning it looked a lot like the UK is/was China...
