PO1 William "Chip" Nagel A lot of public agencies are using contract employees. They are saving on pensions and health care cost. Future generations are going to find it quite difficult securing employment with good benefits.

Admittedly the majority of companies have not provided pensions for a while now. Typically you only see the pension type of benefit in hospitals or utility companies, and education/ academia if tenured or union positions as an example. However, if the healthcare marketplace can be competitive to meet the needs of the contracted workforce, there may be opportunities for greater flexibility for those who need it as well as those attempting to get into new industries as well.

The prediction is that this will increase significantly, and more corporations will provide less benefits. The number of corporations providing 100% of employee’s healthcare has dropped to 9% this year from a peak of 34% in 2001. Thanks for the great article.

Freelancing is the new career field? Compared to full time contractor workforce, it comes down to comfort zone for stability vs. flexibility and job security vs. non-committal. To each their own I say but freelance contracting sounds like self-employed opportunist.

I don't think it's job security vs non-committal. The article says they started because they couldn't find a job. I know a lot of people in this boat, or those that just decided, for one reason or another, flexibility was required. I wouldn't call them self-employed opportunist in a negative sense though. I know some making a lot more than they could as a contractor, but of course they have to pay their own benefits.
