The Beretta BM 59 is an Italian-made rifle based on the M1 Garand rifle, but chambered in 7.6251mm NATO, and modified to use a detachable magazine.[1] Later revisions incorporated other features common to more modern rifles.

No they used surplus M1s since US was going to M14. The M14 is based on M1 Garand. One major change with the M14 is it uses a gas rapper system. Gas from barrel bleeds off, hits forces a piston which , hits operating rod which activates bolt. The M1 Garand the gas bleeds from barrel, hits the operating rod, which activates bolt. High pressure ammo could cause the M1 op rod to bend. Not all details given, just the down and dirty.

I suppose it still fires a 30'06 but according to some comparison caliber comparison shows in terms of the overall effectiveness both rounds do just about the simular damage.

I have a Garand, an M1A, and an AR-10, versions of each of the nation's last three battle rifles, all chambered in .308. I forgot the M-1 was originally chambered in 30-06.
