Milburn G. "Mel" Apt (April 9, 1924 – September 27, 1956) was a US test pilot, and the first man to attain speeds faster than Mach 3. He was killed in the destruction of the Bell X-2 during the record-setting flight that exceeded Mach 3.

Thanks for reminding us that US test pilot Milburn G. "Mel" Apt was the first man to attain speeds faster than Mach 3 and that he died on September 27, 1956 while testing the Bell X-2 SGT John " Mac " McConnell. I expect that Chuck Yeager knew him.
