To be honest tensions began rising millennia ago - first the Muslim conquest in the 600 AD time frame, then Crusades, etc until creation of the Jewish state in 1947 when violence ramped up and periodic wars. The USSR and US armed Israel, Egypt, and even Iran until the Shah was deposed.
Fighting between Iran and Israel has been ongoing for a long time through Quds force and Iran's proxy Hezbollah, my friend LTC (Join to see).
Saber rattling will continue with covert operations, probably .

LTC Stephen F. You are right, there has been some level of conflict in this area forever. This article leans toward an escalation resulting in an armed conflict. If that happens, who is backing/supporting who could make the difference between a local conflict and a much larger scale event.

At some point, the hatred among Iran (Persian) and Arab States and Israel will lead to military action. In the 20th Century, Arab States attacked Israel several times hoping to wipe it off the map. Each time Israel won and the Arab States were damaged and forced to agree to a peace treaty or at least a cease fire. In the 21st Century we have seen the Arab States using terrorism more effectively while Israel fights back with targeted conventional weapons and special operations forces. Israel may be winning this war militarily, but not doing as well in the world political arena.
The Persians are an enemy Israel hasn't faced in the last 100 years or so. The Persians (Iran) has been busy fighting with the Arabs, Kurds, and other nations or people groups in the area. Late in the 20th Century, the radical Muslim forces in Iran appeared to notice Israel for the first time in quire a while and begin launching threats against them. In recent years Iran has expanded its influence and military actions toward Israel and the conflict is almost bound to happen.
The future military confrontation between Israel and Iran will be violent and short. Iran will attempt to attach Israel through its vassal nations such as Syria, Gaza, Lebanon. Based on past performance, they will make initial erodes into Israeli territory, then the Israel Defense Force (IDF) will hold fast and counter attack pushing the Persian ground forces back slightly. The Iranians will also employ rockets, guided missiles, and air power to attempt to defeat the IDF. After withstanding a severe pounding, the Israelis will plead with the international community to reign in the Iranians and restore peace and order in the region. This effort, if undertaken at all, will fail because the Iranians will refuse to back down--they will smell success in destroying Israel. Within seven days of starting the war, Tehran will disappear in a cluster if mushroom clouds as Israel unleashes its nuclear weapons against the force attempting to destroy it. At this point, I pray cooler heads will prevail in the international community and the other nuclear powers will not become part of the war.

I would expect that as soon as Israel has solid evidence, they will strike surgically first. They've been quite successful in the past with that approach.

SGT Kevin Berman I think the question is about the escalation. If Syria and Iran have changed their ROE and more openly attack Israel, while the initial response may be surgical strikes, would this escalate to an all out war?

LTC (Join to see) If we loosen our reins on Israel, we would see another repeat of the “six day war”, if they attack Israel on a large scale. JMHO
