I'd read the story, it happened not terribly far from us, I'd once read an article about the USCG enlisted who actually saw them on the eastern end of LI. He'd apparently testified at their trial, and was personally thanked, I'd read, I gathered, by j Edgar Hoover, hope was of interest, many thanks.

Thanks for sharing SSgt GG-15 RET Jim Lint. There were certainly German sympathizers on the east coast in 1942 who would have been willing to aid saboteurs.
With U-boats off the coast sinking merchant vessels, it is not surprising that the Germans would have been sending spies and saboteurs to interfere with our war production and shipping capabilities.
