Had an Uncle who was wounded in Italy. Taking out a pillbox he was hit several times. He was the equivalent of an E-7. He received a Silver Star (the first I had ever seen.) Along with Purple Hearts. I never got to meet him, he died before me and several of my cousin's where born. Including his second daughter.

For those who do not know, the well known star of the longest running TV series ever was said to have been the first person to step of the landing craft at the Anzio beachhead. At six feet, six inches tall, it was up to PVT (?) James Arness to test the depth of the water prior to the others on board disembarking. The slight gimp in his step that was sometimes noticeable on TV was "earned" as a result of wounds received at Anzio.

On Anzio Beachhead on January 22, 1944 as a rifleman with 2nd Platoon, E Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division. Because of his height, he was the first ordered off his landing craft to determine the depth of the water; it came up to his waist.
