One of America's greatest mistakes was allowing its Merchant Marine to diminish and decay until it is virtually extinct. How would we today move great amounts of men and material around the world? By air? Yes, we could. But no aircraft can move the sheer volume of tonnage like a ship (and at the same price). Imagine if we had stipulated that nations wanting access to American markets, had to ship their products in American bottoms. Sadly, we didn't protect our Merchant Marine and heroes like this will not be heard from again
