SSgt Christopher Brose - Or from a further distance, or a different gun. But knowing that it was a .50 cal that just killed someone 2.3 miles away a couple weeks ago? Not I, said the fly.

SN Greg Wright - Those were different rounds. The long distant shots are .50 caliber rifles firing the .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun) round. A pistol is going to fire a .50 AE (Action Express) or .50 S&W Magnum.
But that's like the difference between standing in front of a high-speed pickup truck vs. standing in front of a high-speed train. Both will ruin your whole day and everything else, but one is quite a bit more emphatic about it.

SSgt Christopher Brose - Thanks for the clarification. I knew the sniper round has more energy. It's just that the human brain (well...mine at least) makes the connection '.50 cal' and then it takes a conscious effort to recognize the difference. MUCH easier to tell the person wanting to shoot a book on my chest to fuck off :).

SN Greg Wright - Incidentally, there is another .50 round you might find interesting. It's the .50 Beowulf. It's a round specifically designed to be used in AR-15s.
If you already have an AR-15, you can buy an AR-15 upper chambered in .50 Beowulf, and the rounds will fit in the AR-15's magazines, so it's pretty much plug-'n'-play with the AR-15 lower you already have. If owning an unusual gun is your thing, you might want to put this on the list. :)
