Thanks SGT John " Mac " McConnell for sharing a great summary of the zoot suit confrontation where California typically went against immigrants in favor of the military in the middle of WWII in downtown Los Angeles.
It was sad but unsurprising, that when bigotry was mainstream against blacks, Japanese and Latinos, too many stood by and did nothing. It was good that the military authorities decided to act when LA authorities blamed the victims and that First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt issued a Bully Pulpit statement against bigotry.
