CPT Andrew Wright I want to recall that early TOW missiles as pictured, were guided by the discrete firing of 78 small rockets, to alter it’s direction. Over-corrections by an inexperienced, zealous Gunner would expend those 78 rockets and additional guidance would be lost. (1978 photo).

Yes, CSM, I think you are right. It took a patient and steady hand (or shoulder) to guide the missile. I was an 11H for a few years back in the 80s. We were still using TOWs mounted on Jeeps in the 82d until the late 80s.

On the Dragon, if you didn't have a steady hand at launch, or you would "lose" the missile in the sights and it would just go wild. Both of the early systems would lose the missile if the wire broke, which it did on occasion.
I'm amazed that the system lasted this long.

Andrew I never fired a TOW
The truth is I am kind of glad I am not an Armor guy. I will say my boots and uniform are much more thin skinned than a tank but have to figure something out. I think I would start by trying to hide and hope a brilliant idea hit me.

Modern armor improvements, reactive armor, etc. As far as I heard, the only upgrades to TOW was a smaller tandem warhead to work on reactive armor years ago. For a While I was 11H- Dragon/Tow. currently some main Battle Tanks can out range the TOW. And it is not Fire and Forget either.

SGM Bill Frazer , you're absolutely right. I was a tanker before I put the crossed rifles on. The requirement to guide the missile on target is a big disadvantage for the TOW system, especially when most modern battle tanks can put accurate fire on a target in seconds at close to the maximum range of the TOW. A fire and forget system is really what we need if we want to increase survivability for our BFVs and ITAS Platforms.
