My son is a junior in High School and is considering enlisting into the National Guard. Ultimately he wants to be an Army Warrant Officer Pilot. What are the best MOSs he should consider that would help prepare him to be Warrant Officer Pilot?

Any MOS can go to flight school. Getting a 15 series MOS that is not E or W (those deal with unmanned systems) may give him a slight advantage because he may have an easier time getting his letter of recommendation a little easier since he’ll have an opportunity to get to know people. Especially if he goes 15T or 15U and becomes a Crew Chief/Flight Engineer.

Do you remember a similar question recently? I feel like someone thinking of enlisting asked something like this within the last several weeks. I figured you might have responded to it and be a good person to ask.

Thanks for the fast response. My son will be at JBLM National Guard for about 5 years so hopefully he will get some good experience before he applies. I have talked to the recruiter about this, but this is the first time I asked the question on this web page.

Getting experience is good but he shouldn’t wait too long. That window of opportunity closes really fast. The age limit to go to flight school is 33. There are age waivers they’ll give to exceptional individuals but I’ve never been able to find, in writing, how far passed 33 they’ll consider.

MOS does not matter. But if I had to pick and it was available you might want to look at a 15 series. But again, it really doesn’t matter as much as you flight test, recommendations, and being medically qualified.

Thanks COL, his plan is to enlist in the Guard soon so he can get some experience with the Helo Squadrons at JBLM. He is also looking at the Pilot Program at Central Washington which should help him with his SIFT test. At this point, he can get some good recommendations from his High School Teachers and his Sea Cadet Officers, but that's about it.

Why not the Street to Seat program? And welcome to Rallypoint, Captain.

Thank you and good point. However, I don't think he will have much of a chance with the Street to Seat because he has little flying experience, would not do well on the SIFT and we don't know any CWO who would recommend him at this point. He is a good student with good grades and asvab, but that's about it at this point. We are going to take a look at the program though. Thanks again!!
