This can be asked for the entire 13 series, but what awards could be justified in giving a soldier who preformed above and beyond in theater? I am trying to get a basis on this matter for future reference. Lets say though a 13R or 13B are involved if fire missions that result if the finding of a attacking enemy and then send a round over. While they dont qualify for a CAB, could they be put in for V devices or any other combat awards because they helped track a certain amount of incoming rounds, or indirectly engaged enemy by means of artillery?

So a gun bunny, gets their commands from the Fire Support Officer, pulls lanyard (insert BOOM), and sends round to defeat enemy....that's called doing their job. I don't see that as award worthy.
Are there other meritorious/commendatory achievements to merit said award? What else can be said about it to merit a medal w/ corresponding C device?

SFC Michael Hasbun - Your Point is well taken SFC Hasbun. he does that by exceding his fellow crew man. As first to formations, Best Uniform, The Man I most trust and to leave in Charge when my self and my other NCO's have to leave for what ever reason. Good GT score, Good PT. This unnamed person is usually the Howitzer driver... Knowable in equiptment Mainataince. and can answer most questions, with out to much diffucualty. He Surpasses his peers, In these area;s. and is probly the next guy I'm sending to the board. I can send him to the motor pool w/o much guidance, and have them load up for the next weeks field problem before I arrive, to Make sure it's all done. and When I. or my gunner arrive, he will report ... whats done... what their working on. and what's not done. Then any issues they are having. He dependable, and I can trust him more above the other guys in the section, to handle "THINGS" in my Absence....

SGT(P) Vincent Kuhlman - You don't need to sell me brother. If this individual deserves an award, then make sure those bullets reflect that. Ultimately the CDR will agree or disagree based on the strength of those bullets. Just make sure it's based off of objective, quantifiable data. Believing someone deserves an award isn't terribly useful. Generating a solid 638 does.

Being a Training NCO, I've done my share of 638's for NCO's that couldent write very well. Some really weak buillliets. Ive seen several awards get downgraded, cause of weak builliets too. Top would always tell me SGT K, can you help so and so, with his award?

As a Vietnam Vet (82B & awarded a Purple Heart) and served in BCT environment for 25 years as a reservist, a soldier with pride of duty and country is probably the greatest asset our military can maintain.

Sure being recognized in doing a job well done is important, but I best enjoyed it within my group of Battle Buddies.

People that have not worn our boots on ground, do not have the understanding of sacrifice and knowledge of what we as soldiers really are. We have gone through many conflicts as a group, but as individuals, every single one of us will have a different outlook of the intervention we just went through.

I as a soldier did my job to the high standards required to be a soldier. We Move As One Element, but with different outcomes and experiences.

If you deserve an award, typed up a draft and send it up. Easy!!!

How many of you notice rack of metals on some uniforms? Do you wonder how they get it ... I do! I’m sure some are valid but OH MY GOD .... need I say more.

Keep doing your job because each one of us are needed to complete our mission successfully.

I'm definitely proud serving with y’all no matter what your job was.

Not a V device. That's only for Valor. If the actions that deserve recognition are combat related, there is a C device that is specifically for that. So, an AAM or ARCOM with C device would be appropriate.

Thats right, I forgot about those new devices as they weren't around my first go around. But yes it seems its made specifically for those whom were involved in combat without actively engaging. Thank!

During my time as a Bravo, and in Iraq, we NEVER DID Arty missions. We were patrols teams QRF, etc etc. So I didnt have that problem. Sadey we Qualified for our CAB's when we had 2 humm-v's blow up duiring rotations. My Command was Really Stingy on V divice's Only 1 perosn got 1 during my 3 tours of Iraq... I Heard they were working on a Artillery CAB, after I retired in 09. Dont know if anything came of it on not. Just what i heard.

You can retroactively apply for your CAB if you didn't get one, the process is very easy. On my two extended deployments to Iraq as a 13B I only touched howitzers for quarterly maintenance also. You'll typically see E-6/E-7 or higher and 0-2 or higher receive BSMs as their end of tour awards, E-5 and below usually ARCOM or AAM. I saw a few V devices given out for the right reasons, but saw 5 times as many denied for the wrong reasons as well.
