History in the Making

This is truly history in the making. On 30 Oct 15, the 92 Information Operations Squadron was redesignated into the first of six new Cyber Operations Squadrons. Much in the same way the Army Air Corps began training new flying units at Kelly Field (now part of Lackland AFB), the 92d COS is currently there now, laying the ground work for the other 5 new squadrons, which will be activated in December.

The 92d was first activated in 1942 as the 92d Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor). Since then they've flown various airframes including the P-38, F-47, F-80, F-86, F-101, F-4, and the A-10. Our current weapon system maintains the aviation mission history of the squadron with the Mobile Interceptor Platform. Their primary mission now is Cyber Vulnerability Assessment & Hunt. In the next few years, the 92d and it's sister squadrons are chartered to intercept and remove the enemy from our nations most critical systems and networks.

I watched this squadron in it's first reactivation as a cyber-like unit when we stood up as the 92d Information Warfare Aggressor Squadron, 15 years ago. We were the cyber versions of Gen Billy Mitchell as we proved the value of cyberspace warfare to the USAF and DoD. I am proud to have returned to this unit after my retirement from the military and to have witnessed this historical event.
