"The Cavalry Squadron of 2025." What are your thoughts?
Saw this on the Fort Benning website http://www.benning.army.mil/armor/earmor/content/issues/2015/JAN_MAR/Trottier.html
Personally I think this would be great. Thoughts?

I think the concept is just about there. If the SCO is the Brigades Chief of Recon, than he should have all available assets to answer the Brigade PIRs. The only part I feel that is not a force multiplier for the Squadron is the Sniper Platoon. I say this because for the ABCT and SBCT the Recon Tempo most likely will be rapid and forceful which is not conducive to Sniper/Counter Sniper Operations. Whenever a Leader emplaces Soldiers, they need to have a plan to recover them. The Snipers could be useful to the IBCT RSTA. I think the ARS needs more Indirect Fires capability in order to shape the OE to meet the MLCOA and to deter the MDCOA.

1SG, concur on the indirect fires. The mortar PLT assigned to each troop is a good start. I trust there is a fire support officer/section at the squadron level and that additional indirect fire support is allocated. Overall, I like the article. The author's closing point regarding a "fully capable Cavalry squadron" is on target.

It reminds me of an ACR formation in some ways. The biggest piece missing would be the Kiowas, although I'm guessing the UAS assets would fulfill that role.
The author was actually one of my instructors at MCCC. I was also there for some of the lectures referenced. It definitely brought back some memories.

This looks like modification of the old Div Cav. It looks like it can be sliced out to support multiple operations. All this and no Air Cav added to it. Why not throw in a troop or two of Kiowa (or whatever they will be by then). I don't think unmanned aircraft is as efficient as Air Cav.
