I recently joined the army and I got cavalry scout even though I wanted Infantry. Is it mandatory to wear the hat and spurs?

You have to earn those spurs through a spur ride.

Or by serving in a Combat Zone (Gold Spurs).

You have to earn the spurs, and if your unit requires you to wear the Stetson, that's what you will wear.

I found this thread that may be a good source of info, with several senior NCO’s speaking from experience and regulations.

Here is the comment in regards to some helpful info. I’ll keep digging, but these may hold the answer for you. I hope this helps. All of my friends, I hope you will join in with your advice on PVT (Join to see)’s dilemma.

SGT Michael Thorin - if you look at my comment in the link you posted, I describe pretty much what you said. My limited understanding was it was a package deal. You earn Spurs, then you wear the Stetson.

Faith in the internet isnt one grand gesture, but many small attempts....

I understand sir. LTC Jason Mackay, we haven’t spoken before, but I have a tendency to further break down what has been said and really look pretty darn unimpressive when I do so.

I am working on this, however, and I hope you have the patience for me to work on it.

Until you replied, I didn’t even recognize I had done it. Thank you for replying. To my comment sir.
