How is Fort Richardson? Specifically for a signal soldier. I know this may vary depending on unit placement.

Can’t speak for your mos but Alaska is beautiful and JBER rocks! Just outside of Anchorage. If you end up living off post stay away from Mountain View/Government Hill.

So Inwas stationed at JBER years ago, but the memories are still fresh. The base itself is small with only 1 brigade now since the engineer transitioned somewhere else I believe. Should only be the 1-40th Cav, 2-377 PFAR, the 509th, 501st and if I remember correctly the BSB. If your one for outdoors the try to go. For your MOS specifically there is a signal unit there unless your assigned to one of the other BN’s listed. Field exercises are not bad. Big ones are either in Fort Grielly (Spelled it wrong) up north near Fairbanks or Fort Polk. Given that you are signal and the unit love to train, well when I was there they did then expect to be utilized heavily. Again, this was 10 years ago for me.

Overall, JBER is a wonderful place outside of the lower 48. Depending on where you’re from, a person that isn’t familiar with cold conditions and long winters, you have to embrace the environment and get outdoors to enjoy it. Alaska is naturally a beautiful place! It was my first assignment departing AIT in ‘04. Coming from the south I initially dislike everything about it. However, I remained on station until ‘13 to say the least. I got some really good training and met some very good leaders that have impacted me in my career.

For me, as a Signal Soldier in 4th BCT 25th ID, my biggest struggles were personality conflicts as a new -10 level Soldier. More so my own with being around combat arms personnel and hi-speed paratroopers. I spent my tenure in the BSB and FSC in support of the 501st. Once I embraced the “just get It done” attitude I took advantage of a lot of opportunities (military schools) offered there.

I would suggest you surround yourself with like minded individuals that want the same as yourself and you’re going to leave there a better leader.

I love Bragg, but there is nothing like exiting a high performance aircraft in -30 degree weather. AATW! Have fun!
