I went National Guard from Active duty. Just be prepared for none of your equipment to work. And it is harder to get parts and such to make things work. I'm running an S6 right now and none of my communications stuff across the battalion has been checked in like 2 years.

If you want to still continue outside of active duty, Look into both reserves and guard. Reserve units are fewer than guard units, so you might be traveling further for your one weekend a month. The national guard tends to offer better chances of getting active duty time as opposed to the reserves. And I'd contact the state you are looking to move back to. Contact their recruiters and not the ones they make you see when you get out from active. Cause the local recruiters might be able to tell you if there is any sort of enlistment bonus. Talking to the active duty guys recruiting for the guard and reserves, won't be able to tell you that.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sorry for the length, but even this does not do justice for what I am trying say.
Definitely speak with your local State Guard and Reserve recruiters. Guard and Reserve are not the same thing and operate very differently, and have very different opportunities from one state to another. I am a mil-tech with the Guard in our JFHQ-J6, full-time but a federal civilian pay status (GS), not like AD at all but I wear the uniform every day. AGR is more like AD, but it is still not exactly the same. You have to realize that there is not a fence around your base and that your whole unit/command/equipment is not immediately available. You will have AGR personnel who are there full-time and they do the coordination. Someone is always available, but your FLL/1SG/CO could have any job as a civilian (Dr., pilot, truck driver, farmer, chef, waiter, garbage man, CEO, business owner, NFL player, police officer.... almost anything). We are not given the resources to meet AD standards, starting with money and time, but it is not as bad as you might think or hear. There are obstacles, but we always figure out ways to reach our goals.
Army Reserves are usually CSS units and NG are generally Combat and CS units, so what type of work and deployments you would like are also factors.
USAR does not do State Active Duty events, such as flood duty, snow duty, wild fires, election support, etc., but National Guard can/does. Our State uses us a lot [99.999% volunteer status, you normally don't HAVE to do State Active Duty], but some States don't use their's at all. Check out the National Guard website for stories of missions we run. Almost all voluntary participation by the Soldier/Airman.
Ask a local recruiter to help contact some regular Soldiers and talk to multiple non-associated people, some full-time and some Traditional Guardsmen,, Co/Bn/Bde/JFHQ level, mix it up if you can. Nobody has all the answers so the more people you ask the better picture you will get.
I have had AD Soldiers contact me that were looking to join, just like you. Recruiter asked if I minded talking to someone and I told him absolutely, have them call me. And I have helped to secure a job for one while he was still in Japan on AD (Fire Fighter for Air Force, now full-time FF for Air Guard as a civilian).
There are endless opportunities and your path is really up you to decide, but it takes a little more adaptation and personal responsibility to do this in either of the Reservist programs. NG offers a "Try One" enlistment for prior service, 1 year obligation to get a feel for it, if you don't like it, you just don't Re-enlist, that's it... 12 weekends and only 14 days active duty, you can do that standing on your head after being AD. I cannot speak for opportunities in the Reserves, but I am sure a USAR recruiter can.
