In the strict sense of the word, a Military Police Officer is a commissioned officer branch 31A or Warrant officers in CID who are 311A. They are MP Officers.

Military Police NCOs and junior enlisted are just referred to as Military Police or MPs.

I understand the confusion as I’ve heard laypeople refer to MPs as MP Officers in the same generic manner one refers to civilian law enforcement as officers.

CID got split from MPC many moons ago. They are now CIDC and are independent of MPC. In fact, they do, as a matter of professional courtesy, keep the local PM advised of their activities, if safe to do so. When I was an MP LT they were still part of MPC and went to school with us at Fort Gordon.

MAJ Ronnie Reams beg to differ but CID is a part of the MP Corps last I checked(I retired in 2017, full disclosure). Their MOS is in the 31-series, their units are Military Police units, they wear MP brass on their ASU’s, etc.

They have different lines of reporting and what not, but they’re still part of the MP Corps. Where did you see different?

1SG Joseph Yorski, MHS - In the late 1970s or early 1980s, it was determined that PMs and some commanders exerted too much influence on their investigations, and they were pulled from MPC and a new command was created CIDC to house them and remove them from MPC influence. Been retired a while and all MOSs seem to have changed, so they could be under MPC now. Then they no longer had offices in the PMO. I remember when they were in MPC back in the early 1970s. USAMPS was at Gordon in those days. Had some CID agents in the Q attending Polygraph School. MPs made them buy uniforms to graduate, lotta grumbling. Things like that coulda been a reason to separate.

MAJ Ronnie Reams Gotcha. Yes, we still have CIDC but the CID school is at Leonard Wood(USAMPS) and taught by the MP School. They’re part of the MP Corps, albeit not ALL CID agents come from our ranks. And when I last checked they were hurting for agents and lowering the requirements to apply.

But then, as of 2/26/21, men can wear (clear) nail polish in uniform and we’re not to use the term “dreadlocks” so nothing surprises me, lol.

Austin McEwin MSG (Join to see) summoned it up perfectly. Although when people have asked me what I did in the Army, I'd often say I was a Military Police Officer even though I was enlisted.
