Cayle, that is a sad situation, unfortunately the nature of homemade or improvised explosive training is very dangerous. They need to investigate to find out what went wrong prior to detonation, if they fix it they need to fix the issue. However, the SOF community can not sacrifice realistic dangerous training to be safe.
BUT.... as dangerous as it is there should be a constant effort to make it as safe as possible.

A sad reminder that being in the military is a dangerous occupation, even outside of actual combat. RIP to the SSG and Godspeed to those who suffered injuries.

Thor, well said, well said. It is a fine line between realistic and safe. For the training to be effective it needs to be as realistic as possible however, as safe as possible. Those two goals many times oppose each other. I have seen many guys hurt and killed in both training and combat there would have been many more in combat if we did not conduct the training.

Thor, I know the above statement sounds a little callous, but it is true. It breaks my heart every time we lose a great American Service member but I also know that number would be much greater if we did not train hard. I need to stop, sorry

When I was active duty Army back in the early 80's, I remember being told that the Army lost approx 500 soldiers a year to training accidents. During the time I recall in Germany losing 18 guys when a CH-47 went down, another 4 drowned when their APV drove off a bridge into a river, and 5 or so died during an airborne jump that went bad in windy weather. It's a rough business for sure.

Sad situation. Homemade improvised explosives are no joke. One relatively minor mistake is all it takes to have a disaster.
