I love my troops and they know it by the amount of time I bother them away from drill. I've been on ADOS orders for the last two years and every so often, the question comes up about who has priority; Guard or Active Duty? I attend every drill but not AT. This year, AT has become a problem again. I am in a position where we are short staffed on the AD side but the same for the NG. Who has priority?

SSG, If you are on TITLE 10 Active Duty Federal Orders. They take priority. Technically you are not required to show up for Drill. You belong to the AD unit your are attached to, not your Organic NG Unit. We have had this issue at my Unit with guys on the OWT mission in the past. However, if their obligations were met on the AD side, they would come help their Guard Unit in any way they could. Just keeping in contact and up to date with your troops is great. Its a pain wearing 2 hats, keep up the hard work and 'ROCK STEADY!"

Is there a Regulation discussing the legality of attending Battle Assembly without pay while on Active Duty orders by choice? I am drafting an MOA between my ADOS Unit Commander and my Reserve unit Commander granting permission for me to attend Battle Assembly weekends while on orders. If anyone has a memo already drafted that would be helpful as well.

What if the unit you belong to is also the unit your on ADOS for? Do you have to attend BA? Or is it the commanders discretion?

I appreciate you coming from the NG onto ADOS orders to support the AD. It's too bad it feels like you have to make a choice between your NG unit and the AD unit you've been supporting. I guess I'd look at the AD unit and ask this question: Is anyone allowed to take leave? If so, look at it no different than taking 2 weeks leave from your AD unit, though obviously you're not headed to Orlando or anything. I think your NG unit would likely benefit greatly from your experience and it would be best if you could be there during AT to help train Soldiers. Obviously, there's no easy decision here; I wish you good luck figuring things out and hopefully you can come up with a good balance.
