I have noticed a up trend to soldiers drinking a lot more now a days. I have also seen a lot more alcohol related incidents and soldiers having to go to ASAP. Is it just me seeing this or are other people seeing it to?

SGT (Join to see) In my opinion, they are looking for a way out and drink alcohol to offset many situations//e.g., stress,.....inclusive situations.

SFC DAVIS I understand those stressers and I will admit I have used alcohol to off set those and for social gatherings yes drinking is ok....I drink myself and I have always made the right choice on how I got to and from there....but I have seen soldeirs.get DUI's when plans were there for them to avoid it but they choose to do the easy wrong....I have seen soldiers get so drunk that they black out.... I hear my soldiers stories over the weekend on how drunk they got and it amazes me..... and yes we were all young soldiers make crazy descions when it came to drinking ...but for me I always had a plan and two more back up.plans ....and if my plan was going to fall through I just stayed in and didn't drink.... maybe these young soldiers need to take a hard look at themselves and have a heart to heart on their descions. ....

Drinking has always been a problem for the military. In the sixties there were frequently articles in our base newspaper and other army publications wanting to know why so many career army people became alcoholics. Duh. We could buy a 16 oz beer at the NCO club for 15 cents and a mixed drink for a quarter. During happy hour you got two for one. At the bulk store a six pack of 16 oz beer was 88 cents. Add to that the fact that you were often somewhere where there was little else to do and the civilians downtown hated us. Many of the single people that I knew headed straight to the club when they finished work and stayed until it closed. When there is nothing to do but hang out in a bar and drink and it is dirt cheap lots of people do it. Of course during that time while the NCOs were drinking at the club their troops were in the barracks smoking dope. This problem is NOT new.

Same in the Navy in the 70s/80s. You pull into some strange port, sometimes the only thing to do is hang out in bars. I always tried to be a tourist during the day, but after about 5PM, it was back to the ship, or hang out in a bar. I sure the hell wasn't going back to the ship, that I had just spent 60 days underway on.

Fuckin' A, Adams! After four days in Naples, I said to myself, "I am NOT just going to go ashore and get hammered; I'm going to do something useful or cultural or SOMETHING!" After an hour of not finding a single opportunity to do anything meaningful, I was in a bar.

We had a battalion party on labor day. The back of a 5 ton was iced down with canned beer. If the "old man" had not give his approval, there would not have been an iced down 5 ton.
