It is a bit surprising that the Continental army could field 17k soldiers for any single battle and frankly couldn't but for the French who (fortunately for us) were bitter enemies of England.
But for France, in all likelihood, we would be flying the Union Jack today as well as paying exorbitant taxes, would have entered WWII two years earlier and would be using pound sterling currency among other things we would consider an oddity in the US.
