Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Seeing Titan." Titan is the largest moon of Saturn and the second-largest natural satellite in the Solar System. It is also the only moon known to have a dense atmosphere, and the only known body in space, other than Earth, where clear evidence of stable bodies of surface liquid has been found.
Each of these images of Titan are from data gathered by the Cassini spacecraft. The visible light image is in the center. The haze is due to small particles in the upper atmosphere. The six outer images are infrared views obtained by the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS), which flew onboard Cassini.
Huygens, an atmospheric probe carried by Cassini, touched down on Titan on January 14, 2005. Dragonfly will send a mobile robotic rotorcraft lander to Titan, and is scheduled to launch in 2026.

Small particles suspended in the upper atmosphere cause an almost impenetrable haze, strongly scattering light at visible wavelengths and hiding Titan's surface features from prying eyes. But Titan's surface is better imaged at infrared wavelengths where scattering is weaker and atmospheric absorption is reduced. Arrayed around this visible light image (center) of Titan are some of the clearest global infrared views of the tantalizing moon so far. In false color, the six panels present a consistent processing of 13 years of infrared image data from the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) on board the Cassini spacecraft. They offer a stunning comparison with Cassini's visible light view."

I am really looking forward to the report from the mobile lander. I think if we are going to find some sort of life out in our system, Titan might be the place.
