Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Dat (APOD) is titled "CG4: A Ruptured Cometary Globule." The Dark Tower in Scorpius (seen in the July 15th APOD) is one example of a cometary globule visible from the northern hemisphere. CG4 is another example found in the southern constellation Puppis. Dubbed 'God's Hand' in a 2015 paper, it lies some 1,300 light years from Earth. CG4 and other cometary globules extend away from the Vela Supernova Remnant (found in the southern constellation Vela). This supernova exploded approximately 11,000–12,300 years ago and is about 800 light-years away from Earth.
The red glow from the globule is likely due to the presence of ionized hydrogen. Spiral galaxy ESO 257-19 appears to be a pac-man style snack a short distance away from the mouth of CG4. In reality, it is another 100 million+ light years away from us and CG4.

WOW! Very interesting Maj William W. 'Bill' Price !!! I took the liberty to include an adjunct video to your amazing APOD this morning... I believe you and your followers will enjoy this video presentation...
Here is the Video description as provided by Coconut Science Lab:

"More space news and info at: http://www.coconutsciencelab.com - the cometary globule CG4 glows in this new image from ESO’s Very Large Telescope.
Although it appears to be big and bright in this picture, this is actually a faint nebula, which makes it very hard for amateur astronomers to spot. The exact nature of CG4 remains a mystery.
Sometimes referred to as "God’s Hand," CG4 is located about 1300 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Puppis (The Poop, or Stern)."
Image Credits: ESO, J.Perez, Digitized Sky Survey 2, N. Risinger (skysurvey.org)
I strongly suggest watching it in FULL SCREEN MODE WITH SOUND UP...
Kerry

I just noticed some foreign words in a rectangular box, which I did not put there... If you see it, I did not do it...and I cannot delete it... If you don't see anything please let me know... Thx, Kerry
