I will be ESTing in Nov 2022. I live in Ft Irwin house on post and everything is at least an hour one way. So is it possible to leave the base housing and move to my own place if I get a job through Skillbridge program 6 months before my ETS date? The closest job is about 90 min one way, or would I be forced to live on base still? Also, leaving the service because I'm not willing to do law school online while serving.

You can do an internship any distance away. I am located at Carson and my internship is in FL.

It has to be approved by the command team right? That's what I was told

SPC (Join to see) - It does NOT have to be within 50 miles. And yes, it will required O5/O6 approval depending on your CoC situation.

When you start TAP they will explain all the requirements to you. You'll need to be completed with TAP already to be eligible for it

The COVID situation changed some things with the internships. I did one located well out side of 50 miles, but it didn't matter because it was 100% virtual. You have to remember that the company/agency doesn't incur any costs, so housing and transportation is on you. Also, don't limit yourself to civilian companies. My internship was with a federal agency, and after I retired I was picked up for a GS12 position within 24 days.
I would also recommend checking out LinkedIn, the DoD Skillbridge Community of Practice has a ton of up to date information;https://www.linkedin.com/groups/12257076/. You can also ask questions and get answers from the people who run the Skillbridge program within DoD.
