Washington knows nothing about fiscal responsibility. The hard fact is that we have gotten ourselves into the position of habitual overspending ... and are now adding to it. Our only hope is that the economy expands enough to ultimately balance the budget and pay down the debt ... a fool's hope IMV. Rand Paul is spot on ... regardless of whether he refers to Republicans or Democrats.

Agree and it is funny the only honey that attracts Democrats ever to agree to a bill is a massive increase in social spending without a revenue offset. Though I will say this bill was more of an exception due to recent disasters we are recovering from.

James-I'll take the first volley.

As a voter, I am sick of the ongoing division that generates a sense that every election cycle, one half of the nation is "out in the cold"...that's not how it is supposed to work. It would be a mistake to attack Democrat spending without citing specifics...and likewise, it would be a mistake to attack Republican spending without specifics. It's not the fact that our government spends money, taxes us, or legislates over us that divides America...it is the specific reasons motivating how and why each party does all of the above when in power.

Agreed. My sense is Democrats want to spend when it comes to domestic programs while GOP want to spend on defense programs. Neither wants to prioritize spending and make reasonable cuts while sustaining a tax policy designed to pay for the budget. Sequester didn't fail the military, military leaders failed at their ability to curb spending beyond its means.

The bigger component might be the dirty but not well kept "secret" behind most, if not all overspending...the influence of politicians using favors to ensure the support of legislators.

The federal spending system is broken. Any budget system that spends more than it takes in will ultimately become unsustainable. Uncle Sam has become the deep pocketed grandpa for too many. Too many entitlement, assistance, aid, relief, and other financial give-away programs that are seemingly impossible to curtail once they come into existence.
Rand Paul was right in one definitive sense: The GOP purports to be the party of fiscally responsible, smaller government. In that regard, they are definitely hypocrites.

Don't forget military programs, defense contracts, foreign policy expenses, and excessive spending by government leaders and elected officials.

Not only have we raised our expenses, we've taken a pay cut at the same time. Although I'm glad to see people get a tax cut, I believe we cut the corporate tax too much and this Congress has already said "well if it is, future Congress's will have to raise it," which is an irresponsible sloughing off of the job they were elected to do. Never mind, I just remembered that Ryan said the economy would grow so much and fast that it would make up for it. I think Rand Paul was calling it like he sees it. I always depended on the R's to be the "small spending" party. They surely complained about the deficit growing in the last 8 years. Now I'm thinking there's not much difference at all in the two.
