It might have been the 77th Infantry division, also known as the Lost Battalion. Note, most unit patches were hand sewed by the men themselves.

I thought it looked like a liberty torch too. Honestly, I had to give up for the day because it was driving me crazy. I kept thinking I had it and then I kept coming back to the 77th.

Do you know which service he was in? Both the US Army and USMC fought in Europe in the First World War.
