What are your thoughts on this story?
Fort Bragg, N.C. Tax Center counsels Soldier for missing formation because his wife was in labor and now denies him paternity leave. Yes, the Soldier notified everyone in advance but the SFC there still made his Squad Leader counsel him. And now they won't let him take leave for his first born child. Thoughts?

WTF Over???
What does the 1SG say? I'd use this as a perfect example of what to put in a negative NCOER on the SFC's abilities. Why are their so many stupid people in the military???

Sorry, battle roster, not MTOE. I was thinking one thing and typing something else.

Because we have senior leadership asking question like this rather than getting to the meat of the story. Remember when you point a finger at a person three of them point back at you. I mite have used the term is trained rather than stupid. Stupid shouts at Lack of training. Buy the upper chain of command. Who approves the training in the unit. JMTC

SFC Robert Walton - It's the only place they can go and thrive! In the real world these people would be failures. (Trust me- I've met them).

Whoever wrote this counselling and anyone that led to it being written is a poor excuse for a leader. Hopefully someone above their paygrade will realize it and take appropriate actions. The exact opposite of what they should be doing to support SM and help the Family celebrate the birth. They wonder why the retention issues exist?

SGT John Graham - I used the off-line conversation and "S#!^ List" method myself over paperwork to great effect back in the day. I always found paperwork most productive when used as a last resort. Conversely, as a retired "Dirty Contractor", I have found the method unproductive; difference in authority and environment I suppose.

SGT John Graham - We all screwed up at times. In return for one of mine I stood tall Monday morning. The CO was a Mustang Captain, and the 1stSgt was solid. My penalty was a slot at NCO Corporal's Course in February. Lots of ice at Quantico. They made me Company Guide when I made Sergeant. It was due to good initiative but poor judgement on my part. I was blessed by those leaders that gave me a chance, and it set the example for my leadership challenges later.

I’m no regulation guru, but I’m pretty sure as long as his unit is not deployed they have to allow him paternity leave. Where are the balls of this kids SQD LDR? The PSG is an idiot. I would run this up to the 1SG, let’s hope he has sense.

When my kids were born I had already worked a plan with my 1SG. I prepared a leave request and left the dates blank. When my wife went into labor I notified my unit and they initiated my leave (no maternity leave back then). Three kids and never had a problems. If this soldier coordinated his and the NCO;eave prior to the blessed event he is in the right and the NCO is totally wrong.

Sgt Lisa Turner - sorry Sarge but it needs to go up the Chain of Command FIRST. During my 30 years active duty (4 Navy; 26 Coast Guard) I have watched the Chain of Command work as it should so many times that I firmly believe in it; I know of one that went all the way from a small unit to the 3 Star Vice Admiral Area Commander who 1st approved the request then 2nd said WTF; why wasn’t this resolved at the unit level? The SN (E3) followed the COC and was prepared to request a decision from the Commandant if necessary.
Going outside of the COC has its purpose but by following the COC you give it a chance to do what it supposed to do.
Methinks, along the same line that CSM Biggs: heck it took me two minutes to find this gem of a document: https://myarmybenefits.us.army.mil/Benefit-Library/Federal-Benefits/Military-Parental-Leave-Program-(MPLP)?serv=122
Damn if this 68 almost 69 year old retired CWO4 can find the it in 2 minutes well I won’t make any inferences; but it was me? I’d photocopy the Regs, highlight the pertinent sections and forward as far up the COC as necessary. If the COC doesn’t approve it (and doesn’t have a legit reason why - then I’d contact my elected Members of Congress with all your ducks in a row.
Good luck!

If this was my Soldier I would stand up for them as their first line. Absolutely no way in hell i’d negatively counsel any SM for missing a formation due to their child being born. This is definitely a learning opportunity on all levels.
