Aggravating the situation is the fact that the nation is pretty evenly divided, Left vs Right. With neither side having a "weight" advantage, the tension cannot be broken. The moment one side or the other gains any slight advantage, there will be a rush to follow the bandwagon and that is the side that will prevail.
