Although it's good to use job boards and apply "blind," please do not make this the primary way you look for a job. Only 10-15% of all jobs are filled like this. Many jobs on job boards aren't real vacancies, they are just trying to see what kind of pool is out there. The applicants are high, so the competition is stiff. You will be a lot more successful by having a plan: targeting the companies you want, doing your research, and networking with people in those companies to ask for advice, not necessarily ask for a job. It's a process but it pays off much more than just looking blindly.

LTC (Join to see) - If you aren't already, subscribe to (free) the AWAI newsletter. Lots of information on copywriting; also http://www.copyblogger.com if you aren't getting that already. You can always start now putting yourself out there as an editor, especially in self-publishing companies. And let me know if you need anything else in this area.

Thank you for your generous shares! I subscribe to AWAI and I am looking into one of their copy editing courses. I just joined Copyblogger and I am perusing their wealth of information! How would you say the industry looks at certifications from AWAI, Writer's Digest University, and other online sources?

LTC (Join to see) - My personal opinion is that if you get a few clients, word of mouth will get you known and it won't matter if you are certified, but I could be wrong. Another master at this is Ray Edwards (http://www.rayedwards.com). I have met him, and he seems very genuine. My bet is if you send him a message, and tell him you are in the military and working on your next career, he will give you some great advice about that.

I would love to hear success stories too! I had a challenging transition, and I have a passion helping others have a smooth transition to the civilian workforce whether it be with my company or another military friendly employer.

I used Intelligencecareers.com, Clearancejobs.com and a few others i can't remember.
I also applied directly to companies. I was hired for my first job a month after retiring.
