This was written about half tongue in cheek, but is a good set of guidelines for all sports at all levels.

Ames Police Department

Tomorrow, the biggest game in the history of the universe will be played. That’s right, Iowa at Iowa State. Kick off is at 3:30pm. The tailgate lots will open early and we know the day will be very busy. I thought I might offer some advice to make the day go smoothly.
Be patient. You’re one of probably 100,000 people who want to get to the stadium. Plan accordingly. No one woke up this morning with the intent to get in your way. Give people the benefit of the doubt.
Drink some water. It is supposed to be 90+ degrees tomorrow. Our water plant is awesome at jamming two hydrogen atoms into an oxygen atom to provide the best water on the planet. If you drink alcohol all day long and skip the water, your day will probably not end well. Help us out, drink some water. Medical services will be strained. We are actually pretty worried about this. We want everyone to make it to the end of the game upright.
I am going to be really honest here, it is incredibly embarrassing to call a 20 year old kid to come get their 40 or 50 year old parent trying to live up their glory days. Those days are long gone, pace yourself. We have to do this every game. Just because the tailgate lots open early doesn’t mean you have to.
Parking is going to be a problem. Many lots will be sold out. Please look for legal parking including the free lots at ISU that we have advertised all week. Illegal parking west of the stadium will result in a game day $40 ticket. If you block a driveway or a fire hydrant, you may get towed too.
Of all the differences in the world, who wins or loses this game is not in the top million. Let’s be respectful. Support your team and support the game, but don’t pick fights. Just have fun, win or lose.
My officers will be on hand along with many other law enforcement, fire, and EMS resources. We look forward to serving, but help us out a bit as we will all be busy. Have Fun, Stay Safe!

My wife tells me drivers park out on the highway and wait for me so they can drive slow.
