GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro and Winston-Salem are working to end veteran homelessness by the end of the year as part of the National Mayor's Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness.
Officials in Greensboro say they will reach that goal if they can get a little more help from the community.
So far, seven local property management companies have signed up to house homeless veterans. Once veterans are placed in a home, they receive case management and support through various veterans organizations.
Partners Ending Homelessness is the group leading the effort. Executive Director Darryl Kosciak says this initiative benefits property managers too.
"If they have a vacancy, they have places to call and get that vacancy filled relatively quickly with very little advertising. They know the income is going to be steady because it’s coming from our providers," said Kosciak.
He says the goal is to make sure veterans are able to stay in that home and abide by the terms of their lease, just like other tenants.
Kosciak says more than 50 homeless veterans have been placed in homes so far.
The City of Greensboro and Partners Ending Homelessness are hoping more property managers will get involved.

No I had not heard this story but I am not surprised and very thankful that local property management companies have signed up to house homeless veterans COL Mikel J. Burroughs. This local support makes so much more sense than a top down approach from the Federal government which tends to increase bureaucracy with some funds trickling down to local levels.
