If you are military veteran with a service-related disability you may qualify for over $3,300 in monthly benefits. These benefits are paid to veterans who have injuries or diseases that happened while on active duty, or were made worse by active military service. It is also paid to certain veterans disabled from VA health care. These benefits are tax-free. The following is a summary of VA Disability Compensation:

VA Disability Compensation Eligibility:
You may be eligible for Disability Compensation if you have a service-related disability and you were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.
VA Disability Compensation Amounts:
The amount of basic benefit paid ranges from $133 to over $3,300 per month, depending on your level of disability and number of dependents.
Note: You may be paid additional amounts if:
•you have very severe disabilities or loss of limb(s)
•you have a spouse, child(ren), or dependent parent(s)
•you have a seriously disabled spouse

VA Disability Compensation Application Process:
For the fastest service you should apply online through the VONAPP website, you should submit what the VA calls a "Fully Developed Claim", this simply means that you should submit all of your supporting documentation with your claim for benefits. This documentation includes:
•Medical evidence (doctor & hospital reports), this includes both military and civilian (if any) documentation
•You should also attach any copies of your DD214 or separation documents you may have
•Dependency records (marriage & children's birth certificates)
Remember, if you have any doubt as to whether or not you should submit documents ALWAYS SUBMIT IT!
You can also apply by filling out a VA Form 21-526 (Veterans Application for Compensation or Pension) and attaching copies of all your supporting documentation with it.

VA Travel Reimbursement
Reimbursement for mileage or public transportation may be paid to the following:
1.Veterans with service-connected disabilities rated at 30% or more;
2.Veterans traveling for treatment of a service-connected condition;
3.Veterans receiving a VA pension;
4.Veterans traveling for scheduled compensation or pension examinations;
5.Veterans whose income does not exceed the maximum VA pension rate;
Mileage Reimbursement Rate: Mileage reimbursement is at 41.5 cents per mile. There is a deductible mileage amount of $3.00 one way and $6.00 per round trip. The deductible is also subject to a monthly cap of $18.00, upon reaching $18.00 in deductibles travel payments made for the remainder of that month will be free of deductible charges.The deductible mileage reimbursement can be waived if you are:
•in receipt of a VA pension
•traveling for a scheduled compensation and pension examination
•meet certain income levels.

Joe, SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL, I called the Veterans Administration phone number that you posted.
The staff member there: was very, very helpful. I told her that I cry all the time, and advised her of other symptoms of PTSD-that I have-and she was totally sympathetic.
That staff member at the Veterans Administration, was in one word: Outstanding.
She will send me a book about all my benefits; with regards to my being 100% service-connected disabled.
She will also send me a letter, stating that my 100% service-connected disability: is a permanent condition.
I cannot say enough good things about that VA staff member.

They will give you back pay from the date of your submission date. If it is an appeal, they will backdate it to your appeal date. It's not out of character to wait 3 years for the decision on an appeal.

SFC Mark Merino - I learned never to appeal a decision. It took the VA a few years to start paying me after they rated me initially at 70% in late 2008 or early 2009. I expect they are waiting for the new Fiscal Year when they will be funded again. :-(

You are better off to refile as SFC Merino has stated. You will get your answers a lot quicker. Massachusetts is one of the better states to file in. Remember some VSO are better than others also DAV is around to help out. Ask question in your area get with other Vets this site is a great starting point. I volunteer drove for DAV and Veteran Inc. both are very helpful for Vets. Now everyone has had good and bad experience it can always be different for you.

There were times when I felt guilty about filing for disability. My cousin got really pissed at me. She ask if my work had been effect because of it, I replied yes, she looked me in the eye and said "that's the reason it's there because it has effect you." I am now rated at 60% and was notified as of 30 Sep I will be getting my full retirement pension and 60% disability. It's ok.

The disability received by the VA does not add up to enough that one could live on the disability allotment. I am not sure where the percent /disability pay is derived. The disabled service member has it the worst, because they are injured and can not physically or mentally work to create another income so he/she can live with dignity.. There is something wrong with the VA when our veterans gave their all on the battle field and return maimed for life and receive 100% disability and are qualified to collect welfare. The rest of us can work and still receive their lower percentage benefits and if fortunate enough can work and add that income to their VA check in order that they can survive. God bless the vet and those serving! The VA doesn't care unless your paperwork is correct and provide the proper copies and the clerk is feeling good that morning.
