Tx campus carry
The Texas House just passed Senate Bill 11 to third reading; however, the bill passed with gutting amendments that the sponsor was forced to accept in order to end a chub (filibuster) intended to kill the bill.

What this means is that our fight isn't over--we need to get those gutting amendments removed in conference committee, and we need to get it done ASAP so that opponents in the Senate can't filibuster the bill. Please contact the following lawmakers and politely let them know that you want to see a conference committee appointed on Senate Bill 11 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE FOLLOWING FINAL PASSAGE BY THE TEXAS HOUSE:

Senator Brian Birdwell (the Senate author of the bill) - [login to see] .tx.us - [login to see] voice - [login to see] fax

Representative Allen Fletcher (the House sponsor of the bill) - [login to see] .tx.us - [login to see] voice - [login to see] fax

Speaker Joe Straus III (presiding officer in the Texas House) - [login to see] .tx.us - [login to see] voice - [login to see] fax

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick (presiding officer in the Texas Senate) - [login to see] .tx.us - [login to see] voice - [login to see] fax

You can email all four at once, but it would be best if you also called to register an opinion with each one. When you call, you'll give your opinion, name, and contact info to the staffer who answers the phone. Remember that you can also send a free fax using http://www.FaxZero.com.

If you live in Texas, be sure to include your phone number and Texas address when emailing or faxing!

If you're not sure why anyone would support the legalization of licensed concealed carry (of handguns) on Texas college campuses, please visit http://www.WhyCampusCarry.com.

It is about time. Those licensed to carry off campus would not become more dangerous to society simply by walking onto a school campus.

The school shootings we have seen to date have involved mentally unbalanced individuals that come on campus with firearms despite the laws against them, leaving the students defenseless against the shooters.

If responsible students/faculty were allowed to be armed, the shooters would not have just defenseless victims to contend with.

Gun-free zones give the criminals a monopoly in deciding who may live and who must die, and don't protect anyone from harm. Quite the reverse is true, in my humble opinion.

Capt Seid Waddell, I note that you work ON a university so your views are given a heavy weight in my book! Thank for adding to the discussion. What are the laws like in KY? If this passes in TX, do you think that will engender support to expand it to other states?

It is still against the law to carry on campus in Kentucky. There has been one case to my knowledge that a student was charged for having his weapon in his car in a campus parking lot, but that one was dismissed by the State Supreme Court.

Full disclosure: I have a CDW license.

Good, hopefully the Senate passes it too. And then hopefully NC follows suit. Then maybe all states.

Considering I live in Texas I agree with this bill. I have seen over the years too many shootings where the problem could've easily been avoided with the concealed license being available in the area. The shooting in Colorado for example when the Dark Knight Rises premiered, is a perfect example if the people were allowed to carry the situation could have easily been either deterred by fear or less loss of life. The best example for a shooting that was adverted due to allowing to carry was in fact the one in Texas where the shooters were perceived ISIS earlier this year. Only one civilian was harmed, and he was shot in the ankle, after which the shooters were both shot and dealt with, with minimal damage and loss of life.
