There are many gun-owners on RP, and some of us carry frequently and go to the range every chance we get, but we may not always be that fortunate. If you could only have one pistol for all of your personal-protection needs, what would you keep? Full-size? Compact? Sub-compact? If you could only pick one caliber, what would you pick?
I have been carrying for over 2-1/2 years, which has given me plenty of time to evaluate what works best for me, and while I still have the luxury of being able to carry whatever I want, I have come to the conclusion that a compact is my best all-around pistol, because I still get full-size pistol capacity and handling, and it is easier to carry than one of my full-size pistols.
As much as I like the stopping-power of .357 Sig, if the SHTF, my ammo is limited to what I have on hand, which is not the case for 9mm, since it is carried by more people than any other caliber.
I have concluded that my P228 is my best all-around pistol. It is 9mm, and carries 18+1, so it has the highest capacity of any pistol I own, and shoots like a full-size pistol.
What do you think? BTW, there is no "wrong" answer.

SGT Steve McFarland I am so close to buying my first pistol. My wife doesn't want me to do it, but I worry about our safety in this day and age.

Just do it SPC Douglas Bolton. As retired LE, I carry every day. I am a widower, remarried. My current wife's boyfriend killed himself with a firearm and I thought she'd have a problem with me carrying. She doesn't and in fact has one of my guns nearby in case she needs one if I am not around.

Brother Steve, I choose the Canik TP9Ssf in 9mm for price, trigger and overall performance. It's full size and fine for me. FYI I carry everything from my Ruger LCP to a 1911. 18+1 works too! Hope this helps FYI like your choice as well my friend ;-)

That's a good choice brother Steve, I like carrying my Canik 1-series too, and has 18 rounds in the mag.

Steve, All of the pistols in the image are great guns, but like you prefer your Sig Compact, I have an S&W M&P Shield 9mm and for the same reasons... It is relatively small , easy to carry, accurate, and a perfect carry pistol in my opinion... Unfortunately, MA has a clip capacity of 10 bullets...including the one in the chamber...

I also have an M&P 9 Shield, but it is too small for me. I never achieved an acceptable level of accuracy with the Shield.
