Your question deals specifically with the GOP, so I will address that, even though I think the Democrats have a similar issue on the other end of the spectrum. The GOP continues to be locked in a war within itself, with "traditional" republicans pulling in one direction and "Trumpsters" (many formerly known as "Tea Party Republicans") pulling in the other direction. The traditionals are trying to pull back toward the center, while the Trumpsters are pulling toward the fringe. For as long as Trump remains in the White House, his followers will prevail. Many of the traditional types are bailing out, or will be voted out. This is a sad state of affairs, since most of the country, IMHO, would rather be near the center.....either slightly left, or slightly right. We won't be seeing that for quite some time.

We see different things. I see the Tea Party as being center, ant the current establishment as a mutant of what it formerly was a decent organization. I can say the exact same thing for the Democrats.

For sure.....I mentioned that the Dems have a similar problem on the other end of the political spectrum. If you aren't close enough to the fringe, you don't make it past the primary.

The Dems defiantly are following suit with the mainstream HRC's, the Bernie group, and the Warren "far left" group. I wonder sometimes if the Bernie and Warren groups are only different in name not ideology. In the end, it's still the same two in charge (Pelosi and Schumer) both of which should cede the reins to someone younger, but won't.

That's a helluva good question. You'd think that Republicans or their leadership could best answer it, but I wouldn't bet on that. For as much as I don't like the ideology of the Left and their shills in the Democratic Party, they at least have a direction. Nancy Pelosi, whom I thoroughly despise, at least demonstrated a remarkable ability to manage her minions (much like herding cats). Since the election of President Trump, the GOP has been acting like someone tossed a grenade into their midst in the Congressional cloakroom, and they are scattering, leaderless, and rudderless. In all fairness, We the People have given them little opportunity to govern, which may explain their lack of ability. The bottom line is that it will remain a helluva good question and we must wait to see the outcome. Anyone who thinks they can supply an answer has an over abundance of hubris.

An opinion question then; if you were in congress and in a leadership position of strong influence, what would be your five to ten year plan for the party, would you stick to traditional Republican ideals, Reaganism, make the party more moderate, or accept a far right ideology? In your party, would MAGA and Trumpism be made more of a reality, or would you drop everything and retool looking at the long run? What would you think is the way forward outside of what is already seen or done?

SSG Warren Swan - Far Right? What is that? Traditional Republican values? What are those? MAGA and Trumpism? No idea of what any other means. Leadership. That I understand. Pick a direction and move. Lead. Right now, all I see is Democrats fighting President Trump and Republicans fighting themselves. The only ones I seeing ready to lead are the Democrats and I don't want any parts of their destination. MAGA? Only We the People can do that and we can't do that while Washington is sucking the life out of us. The Democrats lifted the bureaucrats to power and now not even they can rein them in. Bureaucrats are governing by administrative regulations that they "legislate" and administer, and if there are any disputes, they adjudicate. In other words, they no hold all three branches of government - legistation, executive, and judicial - and they're not about to give them up without a fight.

Five Year Plan? How about a 5-minute drill: Congress start making laws that are sufficiently explicit and bureaucrats administer them as written. Close all administrative courts. Close redundant and unconstitutional agencies and bureaus. That would be a helluva good start...

CPT Jack Durish - I see what you mean, but when the candidate calls themselves a certain way or promotes a certain "Stance", it is what it is. Leadership is fundamental, but is not common. We have a lot of common folk in uncommon positions, who think they're the next "uncommon" leader while doing the same common and ignorant job as their predecessors.
I asked five year plan being nothing in congress moves at any kind of speed. So factor in elections, tastes of the populace at the time, or even forecast it, you could build a model based off metrics and see what the next "big thing" will be. Closing up what you said would be a drop in the bucket to fix problems, but at what cost? You save a dollar from one, you spend five in another. This is congress.
If you were able to actually do your second to last sentence, I'd move to CA and vote for you, and that's not even a joke. It's a hard choice politicians will always talk about, and every one will run from when it's showtime.

The new vision will be the old vision, the republican party is broken, not as bad as the Democrats but close to it.

The reason the parties are having problems is that the people are seeing more and more the wizard behind the curtain. People want real leaders that really do look out for the country and the people of the country. The people are tired of elected officials using their governmental position as a pay to play scheme to increase their funds deposited to their foundation.

PO3 Bob McCord - Most of congress fits the same mold. Right early schooling, right family connections, right Ivy schools, right (lawyer degree), interned with the right congressman or SC Judge, and right party at the right time. Even the Presidents for the most part have been of the same fold. The listener was spot on.
