Excellent post: informative, insightful. Inspires me to read Mann’s work. I was born in 1933 and the authors who influenced me were Phillip Wylie, John Steinbeck, A.J. Cronin, Pearl Buck, Vance Packard, and the like. Most of my own 10 books in print, even the novels, are autobiographical, although I did write two biographies ("The Candy Butcher," a biography of Frank Ray Perilli, writer/producer of 20 cult films and 4 plays, and "A Place For Us," a biography of Wendy Wolf, charismatic disability activist), and two personal memoirs (“The Genteel Poor,” a childhood memoir, and “Lenny Bruce: The Making of a Prophet,” the memoir of my 10 year collaboration with the most controversial comic of the 20th century). This apparently qualified me to teach biographical writing at a local community college. Half my students turned out to be Mormons, and they told me that their church requires every church member to write their biography and submit it to the Salt Lake City archives. I think that’s a fabulous idea: 1. For the accessible digital information it offers future generations, and 2. because of one of the first things I teach in my class, that biographical writing about yourself, your family, or your peers is very therapeutic. The obligation to research accuracy, to tell the truth, and to look for the motivations of peoples behavior is extremely enlightening. Better than any confession to a priest or a fortune spent on a therapist. My advice, try it, or, at the very least, try keeping a daily journal or dairy. A year later, you’ll be surprised at what you’ve learned. Final note, I’ll be happy to answer any questions about biographical writing or my books.
