LCpl Arthur Forbes - More accurately , the Whig party was torn apart primarily over the question of abolition. The Republican party formed as a pro abolition party, and many northern Whigs were draw to it because of their dissatisfaction with the Whig stance of slavery. There was more to it of course, but essentially it fragmented over infighting on between the Northern and Southern states on the question of abolition and never recovered. The Democratic party on the other hand was primarily southern and hence pro-slavery and survived. Though the Republican party absorbed many northern Whigs, it formed independently and did not come out of the Whigs.

Capt Gregory Prickett - Lincoln was actually not, though the 1860 election had four candidates. The Whig party had essentially folded by 1859 and failed to field a candidate per sey. The Democrats had a divided party, with the Southern Democrats nominating Breckenridge, and the Northern Douglas. The remains of the Whigs and No Nothings united to form the Constitutional Union party nominating Bell, while the Republican party ran Lincoln. The vote pretty much ran along the lines of the slavery issue. With Breckenridge taking almost all the southern states, and Lincoln all the northern ones though Douglas did garner 3 electors in NJ and finished 2nd in several. He also took Missouri, and Bell 3 southern states.
