Balaram Khamari is a doctoral student in microbiology who has always felt the connection between science and art.
"They are interlinked," he says. "Even doing a science experiment requires art."
Now, Khamari is bringing the worlds of art and science together – in a petri dish. He's been spending a lot of time in his lab in Puttaparthi, India, culturing colorful bacteria and artfully arranging it on a jelly like substance called agar. He is part of a growing body of scientists across the world who make agar art, and even compete for prizes.
Khamari recently won an award from the American Society for Microbiology for his work, Microbial Peacock. It shows a peacock — the national bird of India — surrounded by intricate feathers. The peacock's body is made from Escherichia coli and the tail feathers are composed of both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The eye of the bird is made of a gut bacterium called Enterococcus faecalis.

Extremely creative. Indians have grown into economic leaders, like Mukesh Ambani, Ratan Tata, Gautam Adani and Azim Premji, just to name a few. India has excelled in space as well, perhaps not as advanced as NASA, setting ISRO to aim for a Mars mission next year. The Indian IT industry is #2 to Silicon Valley in the U.S., making China jealous. India is adding military might with stealth subs, aircraft carriers and 4+ Generation multirole aircrafts, which include the Rafale from Dasault, Tejas from Hindustan Aeronautics, SU-30MKIs from Hindustan Aeronautics and the S-400 from Russia. The Indian Air Force will also get the MMRCA Tejas 2.0, which is a 5th Generation fighter and; HAL in collaboration with TAS and Reliance Aerospace will develop the indigenous 6th Generation stealth fighter/bomber. The Indian Armed Forces is hiring fresh batches of troops and junior leaders. India is also one of the makers of Covid-19 vaccine and it is supplying this vaccine at home and abroad to allied nations. India is also preparing the Sputnik V vaccine for Russia. India is the new global economic leader to recognize.
We must give credits where they are due and India has developed into a global economy and a military force to recognize, which is commendable.
